Dear Parent/Guardian:
In history class we are studying the American Revolution. Friday, May 11 & 12, 2018, we will be holding a Revolutionary War reenactment. This culminating activity is based on many areas of the study from this school year. While all students are required to participate and will receive a grade for it in several classes, we also want it to be a fun, learning activity in which they can participate one last time as an entire eighth grade class. The staff and students are working very hard on this activity. For this reason we are presenting the reenactment drama several times during the day, including after school so that parents and the community will have the opportunity to attend.
The only way accommodate parents and the community is to will extend the activities until 6PM on Friday. The reenactment is for a grade and is a great activity for them. Every effort should be made for your child to stay until the conclusion of the assignment. If your child has an appointment, we need to have it in writing by Monday, April 30. The students have been made aware of this in time to communicate with coaches about our event. This is a school activity and takes precedence over outside events. Make early arrangements with coaches.
We are trying to make this as authentic as time and resources allow. Each student needs to prepare a costume for the event for a grade and have a completed costume in school by April 30. Over the next few months, students have been asked to bring in what they intend to use for their shirt, pants, or skirt in order to assist them in appropriate color and design choices as well as actually making the pants or skirts.
Girls need a long, plain, cotton skirt and a peasant style shirt or button down blouse. Please note girls will be outside during the re-enactment. Wear appropriate clothing and not Sunday best clothing. Girls also need a piece of white fabric approximately four square feet to make their hat. A white sheet would work well for this and provide enough fabric for two girls. It takes about 2 ½ to 3 ½ yards to make a simple small skirt.
Boys need a pair of old pants, preferably not jeans, that can be cut to make knickers. Boys should have a button down shirt, preferably white or a plain, solid, light color. Please note boys will be outside during the reenactment. Wear appropriate clothing and not Sunday best clothing.
Boys are to create a replica of a musket as part of their costume. These muskets should not be made of any actual gun parts. The muskets should not be made with any caps or sound effects. Cardboard replicas will do. It can be spray painted to look more authentic and they have a picture to follow. These muskets can be brought in on Monday, April 30, 2018 before 7:15AM or after 2:45PM and Friday, May 4, 2018 before 7:15AM or after 2:45PM. These muskets will not be allowed on buses. If you are unable to assist your student in getting their musket to the school building, contact me to make other arrangements. If you have any moral or religious objections to this part of the activity please let us know and an alternative activity will be given. Students in Mrs. Nuhfer’s classes have the opportunity to make wooden muskets in class.
We encourage students and parents not to spend money on the costumes but attempt to use what they have. Some students have brought some extra fabric, shirts, skirts, and pants for anyone that may not have clothing for the event. Supplies are limited though. Limited supplies are available here at school.

On Friday, May 11th, we will be reenacting the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, The crossing of the Delaware River, Valley Forge, and Yorktown. The students will be
participating in activities such as sewing samplers, learning military marching drills, cooking the food in a period appropriate way, food preservation, knitting/spinning, leather working, creating pottery, scraping deer
hides, dancing, tin punching, log splitting, as well as other period appropriate activities. On Saturday, May 12th students are encouraged to come back from 9 AM to 2 PM and participate in our colonial trade fair as well as reenact several battles from the day before.
Students should bring a couple of bottles of water with their name on it, sunscreen would be a good idea, and lunch money. Lunch will be the regular school lunch in the cafeteria.
The Revolutionary War reenactment will benefit the students by participating in authentic representations of home and daily life of minutemen and colonial citizens. We truly hope that you can join us on May 11th. Stop in to see the reenactment between 3:30 and 5:30. Thank you for your support.

En la clase de historia estamos estudiando la Revolución Americana. El viernes, 11 y 12 de mayo de 2018, tendremos una recreación de la Guerra Revolucionaria. Esta actividad culminante se basa en muchas áreas del estudio de este año escolar. Si bien todos los estudiantes deben participar y recibirán una calificación en varias clases, también queremos que sea una actividad de aprendizaje divertida en la que puedan participar por última vez como una clase completa de octavo grado. El personal y los estudiantes están trabajando muy duro en esta actividad. Por esta razón presentamos el drama de recreación varias veces durante el día, incluso después de la escuela para que los padres y la comunidad tengan la oportunidad de asistir.
La única manera de acomodar a los padres y la comunidad es extender las actividades hasta las 6 p. M. Del viernes. La recreación es para una calificación y es una gran actividad para ellos.
