Summary

With the addition of new western land, debate over the spread of slavery increased. After all efforts at compromise failed, violent fighting broke out in the Kansas Territory. Chapter 14 Section 1 - Growing Tensions Over Slavery

Summary
When Missouri applied for statehood in 1819, the United States Senate was evenly divided between slave and free states. In 1820 the Missouri Compromise temporarily resolved the issue of balancing the interests of both the North and the South by admitting Maine, a free state, along with Missouri, a slave state. The debate erupted again, however, after the United States gained California and New Mexico following the Mexican War.
