Chapter 15 Section 5 - Turning The Tide Of War

Summary

In July of 1863, Confederate forces moved into the North but were defeated by the Union army at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Gettysburg and another Union victory at Vicksburg, Mississippi marked a turning point in the war. Lincoln’s address at the Gettysburg helped war-weary Americans focus on their shared ideals. After a long, bloody summer, Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant captured major Southern strongholds. These victories led to Lincoln’s reelection. In the last months of the war, General William Tecumseh Sherman destroyed Southern areas in his March to the Sea. Grant and the Union army marched toward Richmond, and Lee finally surrendered. America’s deadliest war freed millions of African Americans, strengthened the federal government, and launched the challenge of Reconstruction.

Chapter 15 Section 4 - The Civil War's Effect On American Life

Summary

The North did not suffer as much destruction as the South, where more of the war was fought. Nevertheless, the war affected soldiers and civilians throughout the country. Women took on new responsibilities, often serving as nurses and sometimes as spies. All soldiers suffered from the lethal conditions of prison camps and field hospitals. Both the North and South had strained economies, political disputes, and people who opposed the war—some of whom were jailed without trials.

Abolitionists such as Frederick Douglas convinced President Lincoln to define the war as a fight for freeing enslaved people. Although it could not be enforced, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had an enormous effect in America and abroad.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’d like to take this opportunity to review the schedule for the 8th Grade Revolutionary War Reenactment and Encampment.  The schedule remains similar to that in the letter sent home on February 16, 2017 as well as the information presented at the informational meeting on April 11, 2017.

Since students stay after the regularly scheduled day, 8th grade students only can come to school ready to go at 9:00AM.  Costumes will be sent home with them on Thursday so that each student can come dressed for the event.  Buses will not be running a route for 8th grade students.  So, if your child rides the bus and is unable to get a ride to school by 9AM, they should ride the bust at the regularly scheduled time.  Those students arriving to school at regular time will help with some of the last minute setup in the morning.

We’d like to invite you to see period crafts and activities from 3:30-4:30 and famous events of the Revolution acted out between 4:30 and 5:30.  Representatives from various organizations will be visiting Willard City Schools to see our event.  These groups include the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Children of the American Revolution, Firelands Historical Society, Historic Lyme Village, Willard Area Historical Society, as well as the Ohio History Connection.

Queridos padres y guardianes,

Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para revisar el calendario para la reconstrucción y el campamento de la Revolución Revolucionaria del octavo grado. El horario sigue siendo similar al que se envió a la casa el 16 de febrero de 2017, así como a la información presentada en la reunión informativa del 11 de abril de 2017.

Dado que los estudiantes se quedan después del día regular programado, los estudiantes del 8vo grado solo pueden venir a la escuela listos para ir a las 9:00 AM. Los trajes serán enviados a casa con ellos el jueves para que cada estudiante pueda venir vestido para el evento. Los autobuses no estarán manejando una ruta para los estudiantes de octavo grado. Por lo tanto, si su hijo monta el autobús y es incapaz de llegar a la escuela a las 9AM, deben montar el busto a la hora programada regularmente. Aquellos estudiantes que lleguen a la escuela a tiempo regular ayudarán con algunos de los arreglos de última hora por la mañana.
