Dear Parents/Guardians,
The annual Revolutionary War Reenactment held by eighth graders at Willard Middle School is quickly approaching. Pending Board approval, this year we would like to offer students an opportunity to earn an overnight experience on May 13th in the Revolutionary War encampment. I have secured six revolutionary war style, canvas tents. Boys and girls will have separate tents and will sleep on individual cots.
Student will benefit from this amazing opportunity through the leadership of organizing and experiencing the encampment the night after the reenactment. Participating students will be equipped with skills and content above and beyond the activities of the school day. The kids will learn drama and first person interpretation skills as they learn about different perspectives of the individuals involved in the American Revolution. This enrichment activity will keep students engaged in the learning process through the fourth quarter as they complete their requirements to participate.
The Schedule
6PM - Finish the school day reenactment activities
6-7 PM - make dinner using hearth kettles, and open fires
7-8 PM – Talking with Reenactors
8-9 PM - Period appropriate games
9-10 PM– Storytelling in first person
10 PM – Astronomy with Mr. Plotner
11 PM - Lights Out (TAPS)
6:00 – Wake-up - clean up
6-8AM – breakfast over the open fire
8AM - Clean up the camp and prepare for community visits
9-11AM- Community visits to the camp
11AM – Take down tents and encampment
Noon - Students released to parents
Students should understand that by completing this application they still may not earn the privilege to spend May 13, 2016 in the Revolutionary War Overnight Encampment at Willard Middle School. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, turn in all their assignments on time, have no discipline issues, complete an application, and type a single spaced character sketch of the person they will portray in the Revolutionary War Reenactment and Encampment. The application is due on April 29, 2016. No late papers will be accepted. All students will be notified by May 2, 2016 if they will or will not be accepted as a participant in the overnight encampment. Space is limited and the event is weather permitting. The character sketch should include:
- Name (fictitious),
- Patriot or Loyalist
- Adult or Child
- Family
- Where they live; city or countryside; colony
- Description of their life
- Describe daily activities
Three teachers have already volunteered to stay through the night and a handful of others have already volunteered to come for part of the evening/morning. We will be looking for parent volunteers as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me here at Willard Middle School. Thanks so much.
Sincerely,
Kyle O. von Kamp

Queridos padres / Guardian,
